Visual art has great potential for storytelling. Drawing on stories from my lived experience my project explores how much or how little is required in a work of art to create a story, presented in a series of installations that incorporate sculpture, painting, photography, drawing and the written word.
I’m curious about the relationship between presence and absence in telling a story. What is not seen, heard or said, that which is implied, alluded to or inferred but never fully addressed. For me, works of art, texts or films that consider this relationship are the ones that pique our interest and keep us returning to them in search of meaning, understanding and interpretation.
The installations are arranged in such a way that the works act as clues, designed to invite the viewer to piece them together and consider the overall narrative that links them. The pieces are often fragmented and incomplete to create a tension between what the viewer can see and what is missing and in doing so question how that tension affects the overarching narrative of the installation.
