Hester Smith

Foundation Diploma in Art and Design 2019 / 20

Housing is getting smaller and more congested. My plan for this project was to design a simple piece of furniture that allows the user to save space, but remains practical and comfortable. It was important to me not to compromise the design in any way. I experimented with various different pieces of furniture, varying in both purpose and beauty. I researched many designers’ and arist’s work to influence my final idea, making both models and many sketches along the way. Eventually I narrowed my idea down to a lounge chair. My original choice of materials was varying types of wood and acrylics that could be dressed up with cushions to provide comfort. A change in material (due to Covid) to corrugated card allowed me to keep similar aspects of my idea and not drastically change the outcome.

Assembling the chair

The user dismantling the chair and placing it back into each side of its storage mould.

Magnets are used to hold down the pieces in the mould as well as add support to areas of the chair when in use.

The user sliding the storage mould behind an object to save space when not in use.
